Details about the Homeless
Many advanced countries, including Canada, are hosting hundreds of homeless individuals across the globe. The rising figures have become a matter of great concern that needs immediate attention from all stakeholders.
More than 235,000 persons experience homelessness yearly in Canada, with 25,000 to 35,000 permanently homeless. This alarming matter in Ontario province decreases life quality for many individuals and families.
A recent study identifies 39,408 unique individuals in Ontario between 2010 and 2017. In addition, the number of homeless who visited the Emergency Department increased, and the majority was the working-age population, particularly younger adults.
In 2021, the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario (FAO) estimated that the number of households in core need will go to 815,500 homes in 2027, an increase of 80,500 households from 2017. Population growth and higher housing costs will offset household income growth and the incremental support provided by provincial housing programs through the NHS (FAO, 2021). Fred Victor, a social services charitable organization, pushed in one of its journals that 76% of homeless people in Toronto expressed the high rental cost as the need to get out of homelessness, and 94% said their desire to have a permanent.
Therefore, we believe it is a critical moment that requires local organizations' concerted efforts to mitigate the side effects of multiple unfortunate conditions. Assisting those who are unwillingly experiencing homelessness contributes to society's growth. Serving Love Applications Ministry wants to contribute to a better community through this program to empower underserved individuals to become independent and contribute to society.
